When beginning a new J program at Washington University, there are a number of steps that must be completed within a specific time frame.

Department Check-In

Within three days of beginning your J-1 program at Washington University in St. Louis, check-in with your sponsoring department.

At that time you will complete appropriate payroll paperwork. Note the Federal Form I-9 Employment Eligibility verification must be completed within three days of your employment start date. Learn about the payroll process.

OISS Check-In and Orientation

Please register for orientation within the first 10 days of arrival:

Have your immigration documents, to check in and complete J-1 program orientation. Checking-in provides us the necessary information to validate your arrival in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Orientation provides you with immigration information you need to know to ensure you maintain legal status.

Advanced registration is required and must be made online at J1Orientation.eventbrite.com.

Social Security Number

You are eligible to apply for a Social Security Number once you have been in the U.S. at least 10 business days and have been validated in SEVIS.
